Why are my hands, fingers, and feet peeling?

Question by Hope D: Why are my hands, fingers, and feet peeling?
Over fourth of july my feet started peeling. Iwas fishing and swimming in pickwick lake and it felt like a papercut it between my toes. Eventually it started peeling across two of my toes (inbetween, on top, sides, underneath) and I thought it was athletes foot which is weird b/c I run around barefoot or in flip flops. REgardless I went and got athlete’s foot cream to treat it and so far it hasn’t worked, but it helps with the pain…now about a week ago my fingers started peelling and I thought it was calluses b/c of filling out job apps and writing alot. Soon it spread to my palms and now it’s spreading out further…it’s really REALLY painful. I also now have a rash across the bottom of the palms of my hands that itches that appeared around the same time. Does anyone know what causes this and what I can do to help it?

That happened to me when I worked at Dairy Queen and they made me carry around a rag with diluted bleach on it all the time to wipe down counters when I wasn’t filling orders. The bleach irritated my hands and my palms peeled for months afterward, but it didn’t hurt it just itched. Did you get into any kind of chemicals that your skin could be reacting to? Since it is painful I think the best thing would be to see your doctor or dermatologist to make sure it’s nothing serious and get help for clearing it up.

well you probably need to lotion your hands more. or maybe ther is something in the water that is causing allergic reaction. or maybe you are not being cautious, there are germs in the lake and on the floor outside. you choosing to swim in it and run on it gives you mold and fungus.your skin can’t take it so it peals.

It does sound like athlete’s foot fungus which can spread to your hands.

If you have used the cream for several weeks and really see no improvement then you should see a doctor.

There are some varieties that won’t respond to over the counter medications and need an oral antifungal medication for treatment

i used to have this same problem when i was in the 5th and 6th grades. i am still not sure what caused it, but i suspect it was an allergic reaction. for me, it happened in the fall both times, so i wondered about the falling leaves, as i raked and played in them and stuff. they would peel and itch like CRAZY, and my palms and bottoms of feet looked almost purple due to the “tough” skin having peeled off. my doctor gave me some creams to put on them to heal, although I am not sure that it really helped. then it would go away as mysteriously as it came. my guess is it’s an allergic reaction, see your dr to get some meds.
